I started Square dance lessons in Sept. of 1983, graduated in April of 1984. I knew before finishing lessons I wanted to be a Caller. I started Clogging lessons after square dance lessons ended, joining two exhibition teams. I attended a number of Clogging Conventions, attending a few workshops on calling Appalachian style figures & Kentucky running sets. With all that going I managed to get in a set of Round Dance lessons.
I officially started Calling in 1985, teaching lessons at a local high school through Community Education. I attended my first Nationally recognized Callers college in 1985. I was already working in the apprentice program of the Local Callers association and had attend a couple of seminars. I established two square dance Clubs which ran for a number of years.
As Country Western music got hot in the 1990's, I started teaching and cueing Country line dancing. (managed to have open heart surgery some place in there) Taught line dancing and Country Two step through Community ed and helped establish a Country line dance Club where I shared DJ-ing and instructing. As Country music started to slump and I had basically fazed out of Square dancing I left the activities to watch the grass grow. About 2001 I'd had enough of watching the grass grow and decided to get back into Calling. I've always enjoyed teaching people of all ages.
